Mixed Media Art Journal Madness

I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly been inspired by Jen Hall’s Mixed Media classes. In fact, I think I am developing a bit of an obsession with this new (to me) art form.

Although I am very much still in the dabbling phase, already I am finding that I’m looking at my supplies and projects in a new light. I’m reorganising my studio and have been “investing” in masks, mediums and all kinds of other goodies. I’ve begun my first art journal, as this seems to be the direction my “art” is heading. I had to chuckle at even writing that sentence. This from the woman who’s high school art teacher once told her “clearly paint and brushes are not your thing”! I’m now kicking myself for the disinterest and am wishing I had listened more when she uttered explanations about “perspective and light sources”. Last night, I even dreamt about mixed media; so to feed my latest obsession I have been out and about this morning hunting down some great books on the subject.

I enjoyed looking through them so much I thought I’d share with you here.

bookreview_mixedmediatechThe first book is Mixed Media Techniques for Art Journalling, edited by Kristy Conlin (RRP $22.99). It is kind of a workbook and is jam-packed with information. Everything from testing materials and exploring colour to creating backgrounds, collaboration/round robin journals, and various techniques. There are more than 25 step-by-step demos and dozens of pages for planning, practicing and journalling inside the book itself.

My favourite project was in the chapter on making your own journals and covers. An awesome burnished metal covered album by the Creative Foundation’s Vicki Boutin. I’m putting this one on my “Must Try” list.

bookreview_creatingartThe second book is Creating Art at the Speed of Life by the very talented Pam Carriker (RRP $37.99). My head is still spinning from all the techniques and lessons in this book. It really is a bit of a workshop in a book. It covers seven important elements of art (probably the ones my art teacher droned on about): visual perspective, light and dark, colour, form, line, texture and shape. Basically a month long syllabus of art journalling elements, presented in a series of exercises. I particularly loved the chapter on achieving depth and dimension with grey and black and the section on creating pop-up pages.

Both books are distributed by Capricorn Link and could be ordered in at any bookshop.

So much to explore. I can’t wait to get brush in hand and start playing with paint. I’m not sure if it is the rebellious teenager, deep inside me, that wants to prove my art teacher wrong or the little kid who wants to just play with messy stuff; but somehow I think this is just the beginning of a brilliant obsession.

Give us a smile! [layout share]

Hi everyone! It’s Tarrah here with you today posting my first post as part of the Papercut Labs Blogging Team!

I am so excited to be here!! So I thought I would start off by sharing a layout with you all. I was totally blown away by Jen Hall’s beautiful projects and all her wonderful techniques she shared in her ‘Colour Series’ classes held right here at Papercut Labs. I was super inspired by Jen’s  ‘Water’ class and her Stamp’ class that I wanted to have a play straight away.

Smile Collage

I created a collage of pictures above of the creating process. I used Heidi Swapp Color Shine for my watercolour and misting techniques.

Smile

I used a mixture of different brands of stamps and inks including stamps by Darkroom Door, Kaisercraft and Pink Paislee, while the inks I used were Heidi Swapp, Staz-On and Versacolour.

Smile Detail 5

I used some of the 6 x 6 paper pad papers from the bright Heidi Swapp ‘Favorite Things’ collection. I also added some washi tape, thread, a flair, enamel dots and wood veneer to give so more texture.

Smile Detail 4

I almost always use a doily and/or a pocket/bag for extra layering on my layouts. I love the dimension they give.

Smile Detail 2

I don’t use mediums and stamps very often on my layouts (I’m too impatient lol!) but I just love it when I do!  Thank you so much Jen for sharing your amazing talent with us in those wonderful classes.

And thank you so much for stopping by the Papercut Labs blog. I will be back really soon, but until next time: happy creating.

Introducing Tarrah!

It’s been a busy week. A long week. And honestly, I needed just a little break. But today is the day. We have selected our first Papercut Labs blogging team! *fireworks go off, lots of cheering*

Today, let me introduce you to Tarrah.

First. By her work (these images have been ‘borrowed’ from her blog):

Second. By her creative bio:

My name is Tarrah McLean, I am 37 years old and I live on the beautiful NSW Central Coast, Australia with my husband Simon and our two gorgeous sons Luke (9) and Oliver (4).

When I am not scrapbooking or playing Mum and wife, I enjoy working part time in my hairdressing salon that I have now owned for six and a half years.

I have been scrapbooking for nine years now, starting when my eldest son was born. I started when one of my aunties was really into Creative Memories, she showed me the ropes and I was hooked instantly…it didn’t take me too long to venture into my own style with all the other gorgeous products out there.

My own style has really evolved over time….I would currently describe my scrapbooking style as clean, layered, colourful, versatile, fun and trendy! I feel I produce my best work creating layouts but I also enjoy creating cards and mini albums as well.

Some of my favourite brands to create with are Heidi Swapp, Crate Paper, American Crafts, My Mind’s Eye and Bella Blvd.

I look for inspiration everywhere…fellow crafters, magazines, blogs and online galleries….but my favourite place for inspiration is my other addiction called Pinterest! I truly LOVE this idea and it is just flowing with awesomeness!

But, what makes me happy? Everything!! People make me happy, beautiful things, my boys, my friends and family, scrapbooking, travelling, sleeping, shopping, cuddling, watching movies, walking and PINTEREST!!

Lego Love

It’s hard to find a house without Lego. Somehow, it just ends up in our lives, even if we don’t buy it ourselves.

But what to do when you have spare pieces lying around?

They can make fantastic gifts. I am particularly partial to the Lego keyring (above), especially when matched with the Lego keyring holder (number two on the list). It’s getting to the end of the school year and Christmas is coming, why not get a little creative with those mis-matched Lego pieces?

(I grew up in a house with Duplo–basically huge Lego so the under-twos can’t eat it. If you made keychains with Duplo, you’d never lose your keys in your bag again!)

Start collecting those rolls!

Donna Macpherson-Williams is teaching our Christmas Projects class this year and she’s got an advent calendar up her sleeve to teach you. (A lot of tag fun, I believe!)

But, if you’re looking for a quick and easy and the kids-can-paint-it type of job, this might be your type of advent calendar! (Found via Pinterest) Made from cardboard, toilet rolls and a bit of butchers paper, you can decorate it as you wish.

And the kids will love it, because they get to punch through the paper each morning.

Blog Feature: rukristin.com

Good morning, paper friends! I was searching Twitter yesterday using the hashtag #scrapbook, and came across a tweet. This tweet:

Which lead me to this post: Scrapbooking with a Kit. And thus I was introduced to the world of Kristin. Since yesterday I’ve followed her on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.

And her pictures which are only part of why you should follow her too. Her posts are informative, useful and relevant to scrapbooking today. Her Scrapbooking with a Kit post comes at a particularly good time, since the team from the Scrappery Kit Club are teaching next month’s class.

But I won’t hold you up, I know you’re itching to check out Kristin’s amazing photography and scrapbooking posts.
